FAQs
GENERAL THERAPY QUESTIONS
-
Therapy (also called counseling or psychotherapy) is a space where you can talk with a trained professional about whatever’s going on in your life—stress, relationships, anxiety, big feelings, or just feeling stuck. It’s not about having all the answers; it’s about working together to help you better understand yourself and feel more in control of your thoughts, emotions, and choices.
-
Absolutely. Therapy isn’t just for trauma survivors. It can help with everyday stress, building confidence, setting boundaries, improving relationships, processing life changes, or just having a space to sort through your thoughts. If you’re human, therapy can probably help.
-
Not at all. While feelings do come up (and that’s okay!), therapy can also involve problem-solving, learning new coping skills, setting goals, and even creative or play-based approaches—especially for kids. It’s about finding what works for you, not just venting emotions on a couch.
-
That really depends on you and your goals. Some people come for a few months to work through something specific, while others stick around longer for ongoing support. We’ll check in regularly to make sure it still feels helpful.
-
The first session is mostly about getting to know you—why you're here, what you’re hoping to work on, and how I can help. There’s no pressure to share everything right away. We’ll go at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
-
That’s totally okay! It’s more common than you’d think. I’ll guide the conversation and ask questions to help us figure out where to start. Sometimes the best sessions happen when we just follow where the conversation naturally goes.
-
Yes—what you share stays between us. There are a few exceptions (like safety concerns), and I’ll explain those clearly up front so you know what to expect.
Choosing therapy is an act of brave rebellion. It’s deciding that your peace is worth the effort, your healing is worth the time, and your future is worth the investment.
EMDR THERAPY EXPLAINED
-
EMDR is a specialized therapy designed to help the brain process traumatic or distressing memories. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements, taps, or tones) to help "unstick" memories that are trapped in the nervous system, allowing you to process them until they are no longer emotionally overwhelming.
-
No. This is one of the greatest benefits of EMDR. While we need to identify the "target" memory, you do not need to describe every painful detail out loud. The focus is on the internal processing your brain does during the bilateral stimulation.
-
I only do EMDR virtually and use an app (I send a link to your email). The app has a ball that goes back and forth. You can either follow the ball with your eyes, tap along with the sound, or use headphones and listen to the sound bounce from ear to ear.
-
EMDR is often faster than traditional talk therapy, but the timeline is unique to every individual. Some people experience significant relief from a single phobia or incident in 3–6 sessions, while complex or long-term trauma may require more time to build the necessary foundation of safety.
-
While originally developed for PTSD, EMDR is highly effective for anxiety, depression, panic attacks, grief, and even performance anxiety. During our initial consultation, we will assess your history and current stability to ensure it is the right tool for your specific needs.
-
Yes! Remote EMDR is very effective. We will use EMDR specialized software.
